Yeon-Koung Kim drives Korea to upset win over China

 
Korea upset powerhouse China in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) to move to 3-0 record

Osaka, Japan, October 31, 2010 -  Korea upset powerhouse China in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) to move to 3-0 on the third day of first-round action in Pool D at the FIVB Women's World Championship at Osaka City Municipal Gymnasium on Sunday night.

China, ranked third in the world, came into the match off a straight sets win over Canada on Friday. Korea, ranked 21st had not dropped a set in posting wins over Canada and the Dominican Republic.

Yeon-Koung Kim was star again for Korea, as she dominated play with her versatility and power game. Kim scored 24 points in the victory.

Youn-Joo Hwang backed Kim with 16 points.

Wang Yimei was the top scorer for China with 15. China fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Kim smashed Korea to a first-set triumph with several soaring spikes. She finished the set with 10 points (all on attack).

Kim was again prominent in the second set, at one point alternating spikes and blocks to give Korea four straight points and a 21-17 advantage.

Yu Juemin's side made a late push, but Korea took the set 25-23.

China led for the majority of the third set, but the Koreans pulled even at 17-17 and took the lead on another Kim spike.

After the Chinese equalized, Korea took the next two points to make it 20-18.

Korea moved within two points of victory only to see China comeback again to tie the match 23-23. But it was already too late as the Koreans pulled through to a surprise win over the favorites from China.
